Choosing a bituminous waterproofing membrane starts with the project—not with a product label. Application area, roof build-up, substrate, exposure, local climate, performance requirements and project specifications all affect the selection. Torch-applied and self-adhesive membranes use different installation approaches, so they should not be treated as interchangeable without approval from the system designer and the relevant product data sheet.
Start with the application
Record where the membrane will be used: an exposed roof, a protected roof build-up, a basement or another below-grade area. Note whether it is intended as a base layer, an intermediate layer or a finished exposed layer. The project specification and manufacturer’s instructions remain decisive.
Check the installation method and site conditions
Torch-applied membranes are installed with heat; self-adhesive products use an adhesive backing and release liner. Confirm which method the approved design specifies, what substrate preparation is required, and whether site rules, ventilation, weather or fire-safety controls affect the work. Torch application involves an open flame and should only be carried out by qualified personnel following product instructions and applicable site safety requirements.
Match the membrane build-up to the specification
Ask the supplier for the full product data sheet and confirm the modified bitumen type, reinforcement, thickness, surface finish, intended layer in the system, approved substrates and required accessories. Do not select by surface appearance alone.
Buyer checklist
- Project location and intended application area
- Roof or waterproofing system design and layer position
- Substrate and surface-preparation requirements
- Required application method
- Specified membrane type, reinforcement and thickness
- Exposure conditions and local project requirements
- Roll dimensions, quantity, packaging and delivery destination
Questions to confirm with the supplier
- Is this exact product approved for the specified system and substrate?
- Is it intended for exposed use, or does the design require a protective layer?
- Which primer, accessories, overlaps and installation instructions apply?
- What product data, test documents and local approvals are available?
- What storage, handling and site-safety precautions must be followed?
HANZHE lists torch-on membranes with PE film, PET film, aluminum foil and mineral granule surfaces, as well as self-adhesive membrane products. Share the project specification and intended application so the product details can be checked against the requirements. A product page is not a substitute for an approved waterproofing-system design.
