Roofing Membrane Surface Types: A Buyer Guide

When comparing bituminous waterproofing membranes, the visible surface is only one part of the product. A complete membrane includes a surface finish, bituminous compound and reinforcement; the underside and the position of the membrane in the roof build-up also matter. Select a product against the project specification and technical data sheet—not from a surface name alone.

PE and PET film surfaces

HANZHE’s catalogue lists PE-film and PET-film torch-on membranes with polyester reinforcement. These products are described for non-exposed applications. Confirm the exact product construction, intended system layer, approved substrate and whether the design requires an overlying protection layer. The film name by itself does not establish product equivalence or system suitability.

Aluminum foil surfaces

The catalogue also lists aluminum-foil surfaced membranes. Before specifying one, confirm whether the particular product is torch-applied or self-adhesive, whether it is designed for exposed service, and what the approved system requires. Aluminum-foil products are not automatically interchangeable across application methods or membrane constructions.

Mineral granule surfaces

A mineral-granule finish may be specified as a self-protected upper surface in some roof systems. Verify the product data sheet, exposure limitations, details at seams and edges, and the full roof-system design before treating it as a finished exposed layer.

The reinforcement and layer position matter too

Ask for the reinforcement type and the relevant mechanical-property data required by the project. Confirm whether the product is intended as a base, intermediate or upper layer, and how it integrates with adjacent layers and accessories. Requirements vary by building, climate, system design and local approvals.

A practical specification checklist

Send the supplier the project location, intended use, substrate, exposure, system layer, installation method, required product standard or approval, thickness, roll dimensions, quantity and packaging requirements. Request the current technical data sheet and installation instructions for the exact SKU. Where requirements are not yet fixed, ask the designer or waterproofing consultant to confirm them before ordering.

HANZHE’s catalogue includes PE- and PET-film, aluminum-foil and mineral-granule membrane listings. Product pages should be checked for accurate titles, surface descriptions, installation method and classification before they are linked from this guide.
