“Waterproof tape” describes products with different adhesive chemistries and constructions. Butyl tape and modified bitumen tape should not be compared by name alone: the right choice depends on the joint, substrate, exposure, movement, design requirements and the exact product data sheet.
Describe the joint first
Identify what needs sealing: a roof seam, flashing detail, metal-sheet joint, window connection or repair area. Record the substrate materials, surface condition, joint dimensions, expected movement, exposure to water and weather, and whether the detail belongs to a larger waterproofing system.
Confirm substrate compatibility
Adhesion can vary with the substrate, coating, surface energy and preparation. Ask the manufacturer to confirm compatibility with the exact materials involved. Prepare surfaces only as instructed in the product documentation; where specified, arrange a trial adhesion test before full installation.
Match the tape construction to the detail
Compare the adhesive type, backing or facing, release liner, width, thickness, roll length and any installation accessories. Do not assume a product intended for one detail is suitable for another, or that “butyl” and “modified bitumen” indicate identical performance. Check limitations for temperature, UV or permanent exposure, water contact, movement and any fire or regulatory requirements against the technical documents.
Procurement checklist
Include the application drawing or photographs, substrate/coating, joint dimensions, exposure conditions, required service conditions, tape size, quantity, packaging and destination when requesting a quotation. Ask for the current technical data sheet, installation instructions and any project-required test or compliance documents.
HANZHE lists both Butyl Waterproof Tape and Modified Bitumen Waterproof Tape. The listing descriptions mention roofing, flashing, joints and repair uses, but they do not provide enough data to establish which tape suits a particular project. Confirm the exact product specification with the supplier and project designer before purchase or installation.
For general butyl-tape selection considerations, see H.B. Fuller’s guide to butyl sealants and tapes. It is not a comparative test of HANZHE products; verify every product-specific choice against the current technical documentation.
